The Buckhannon Fire Department and other local fire companies briefly shut down Main Street Sunday evening after light smoke was detected inside one of the buildings.

The initial call came in just before 7 p.m., with Stone Tower Brews reporting smoke in the basement. Firefighters were on scene moments later and confirmed light smoke, leading them to evacuation the building as a precaution.

A subsequent investigation revealed the the smoke didn’t come from inside the building at all, but from the alley that runs behind it.

“There was a small rubbish fire behind Stone Tower,” Lt. Linn Baxa with BFD said. “The smoke had wafted into the basement.”

The coffee shop itself was undamaged.

“We can reassure everyone that Stone Tower is fine,” Baxa said.

The fire department had cleared the scene and reopened Main Street within the hour.
