MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s has appointed Julia Meade, M.D., a pediatric oncologist, as executive director of its Blood Disorders and Cancer Center.
In this role, Meade will lead West Virginia’s largest pediatric cancer program, helping expand access to specialized cancer care for children throughout the state and surrounding region.
“We are so pleased to welcome Dr. Meade to our team at WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s,” Amy L. Bush, B.S.N., M.B.A., R.N., C.N.O.R., chief administrative officer of WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s, said. “Her expertise and dedication will strengthen our ability to care for children throughout the region, ensuring they have access to world-class care close to home.”
Meade joins the WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s team after serving as a genetic oncologist at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an associate professor of pediatrics and human genetics at the University of Pittsburgh.
She served as the director of the Pediatric Cancer Predisposition and the Neurofibromatosis Oncology Programs. She specializes in caring for children with a genetically increased risk for cancer, as well as those with neurofibromatosis-related tumors and other rare tumors.
“We have an incredible team of experts who care deeply for their patients and families here at WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s,” Meade said. “One of our strengths is that we have people who come from the same backgrounds as our patients, who have lived in the same towns, who have trained in places that help us understand the needs of the children in our community. That makes me very proud to now be in West Virginia. Whatever a child may need in their journey, we have it here.”
“The children and families we serve are going to benefit from Dr. Meade’s leadership and experience,” Christopher Mascio, M.D., executive chair of the WVU Golisano Children’s Institute, said. “She will provide highly specialized care in a compassionate way that can only be found at WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s. We know our families will feel supported throughout their cancer journeys.”
Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Meade has been recognized for her extensive research and has authored numerous publications. She is a member of several professional and scientific organizations, including the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and the Children’s Oncology Group. She also remains active in educating and mentoring students, graduate students and resident physicians.
“One of the most important parts of WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s is having all the specialists our kids need in one place,” Jeff Lancaster, M.D., associate chief medical officer of WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s and interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics, said. “Dr. Meade is an important part of expanding our services, so no child has to travel far for the care they need. Under her leadership, we know our cancer patients will receive the best possible care.”
Meade will help advance the WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s Blood Disorders and Cancer Center as a destination for pediatric cancer care with a focus on serving children and families across West Virginia and the surrounding region.
“I want to help this program grow to become a nationally recognized center for childhood cancer care in rural states,” Meade said. “We have a unique population here with unique challenges, and families want to stay in their communities while their child is receiving care. My job is to take the Blood Disorders and Cancer Center to the next level and make it a model for other areas of the country that face the same challenges.”
