Rotary of Buckhannon-Upshur awards Challenge Grant to Parish House, Crosslines amid increasing number of people in need

BUCKHANNON — The Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur awarded a matching challenge grant to the Upshur Parish House earmarked for Crosslines in support of Upshur County residents needing assistance with utilities and rent.

This grant will match up to $5,000 in contributions from individuals, businesses, civic organizations and churches.

“We’re seeing an unprecedented level of need for our Upshur County families right now,” stated Isaac Casto, Executive Director of the Upshur Parish House. “Last fall, we were helping 200 families a month; this year, that average is well over 300. Unfortunately, it seems like that trend is going to continue over the next several months or even years.”

Crosslines is the direct assistance program of the Upshur Parish House. The ecumenical outreach offers a food pantry, diapers, personal hygiene items, and financial assistance with rent and utility bills to those who qualify. At present, an anticipated $10,000 is needed per month during the winter to adequately assist neighbors in need.

“We know when a neighbor comes in for assistance, they’re in a dire situation — they’re facing hunger, utility shut off, or eviction,” Casto continued. “That’s a responsibility that we don’t take lightly. Our immediate goal is to provide food and housing stability, but we also want to offer resources and support for the long term.

“Our local Rotary Club has been a big part of that. They’re an incredible partner and sponsor of our programs throughout the year. Now, they’re offering a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in making a donation to essentially double their contribution. We’re so grateful for their tremendous generosity.”

To have your gift matched by Rotary, make a donation to Crosslines by December 31, 2023. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at the Parish House located at 68 College Avenue, Buckhannon. Please call 304-472-0743 or email UpshurParish@gmail.com with any questions. Like and follow us on Facebook.
