BUCKHANNON – Before we get started with the fun, my continued thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the recent flooding.

During the July 21 flooding, I did have to evacuate my home for a few hours, but other than losing hot water and the ability to flush for a while, everything turned out fine. I am now incredibly jumpy anytime a storm comes around, being in a flood zone, but I am extremely blessed by my outcome.

For those who were less fortunate, I can’t say anything that will make it better; hopefully, with our little game returning and football season now here, it can at least be a distraction for you from a reality that can get scary at times.

Now let’s get down to business with the official launch of the 2026 version of the Carpenter Crunch Time contest.

For those unfamiliar with the contest, every week during football season, we have a pick ’em that features seven high school and college games. Anyone can play. It’s totally free, and the weekly winner gets a small token, usually a gift card to a local restaurant.

It’s easy and takes only a minute to enter, and we have a friendly competition amongst readers and amongst the My Buckhannon staff.

This year, the contest has gotten some upgrades. We’ll still pick seven high school and college games a week, but our My Buckhannon fearless leader, Brian Bergstrom, has been hard at work this summer making our contest even better.

First is the new page design, which is cleaner and crisper for picking games. Picks are now public, there’s an ongoing leaderboard, and we’ve changed how we handle tiebreakers. Here is a quick synopsis:

  • Each week we post a slate of games. Log in to your account (or create a free one) and select the winner of every game before picks lock at 7 p.m. each Friday night.
  • The last game on the slate is also the tiebreaker — guess the total combined points scored in it.
  • Change your picks as often as you like until they lock. After the lock, the pick statistics go public.
  • Scoring is simple: 1 point for every winner you call.
  • The best record wins the week and earns 2 bonus points. Ties break by tiebreaker closeness, then season points, then whoever got their picks in first — updating your picks resets your entry time.
  • Points add up all season — the leaderboard crowns the season champion.

It’s really pretty easy — seven taps and you’re done. Ready to play? Click here to see this week’s games, and good luck to everyone!
