St. Joseph’s Hospital honors Becky Perry with DAISY Award

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital has named Rebecca “Becky” Perry, BSN, RN, as the recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, recognizing her compassionate care, clinical excellence and meaningful impact on patients and families.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors nurses who go above and beyond to provide exceptional care. Perry was nominated by a grateful co-worker who was appreciative of Perry’s quick action in helping her husband avoid a potentially bad medical situation over the weekend.

According to the nomination, the co-worker’s husband, a diabetic, had called them at work because he needed a new glucometer sensor. His current sensor had caught on a cable and come loose. He had called his endocrinologist and primary care physician, and even messaged them on MyChart, but had not received an answer back because it was so late on a Friday. The pharmacy was also unable to help until Monday. However, her husband needed this sensor as his glucose readings had been fluctuating too much the week prior, and that morning it had been very low when he woke up. His health could have taken a bad turn if his numbers changed drastically over the weekend, which happened often due to his active lifestyle.

The co-worker reached out to Perry to see if any of the clinics had a sensor. Perry was quick to respond and was able to locate one. She even delivered the sensor to the emergency room where they worked — it had been too busy in the ER for them to get to the clinics before they closed.

“Becky has always been so kind and considerate — in every role she has had here at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She puts others’ needs ahead of her own. She did not hesitate in this situation to help, and for that, our family is so appreciative. St. Joe’s is blessed to have a member of our team who has the compassion and thoughtfulness that Becky does,” the co-worker wrote in the nomination.

Perry started at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2002 as an LPN in cardiopulmonary and then transferred to the Prompt Care Clinic in the emergency department, where she worked and continued her education to earn her BSN. She remained in the emergency department as an RN and later became clinical coordinator of that department, a role she held until the end of 2023. At that time, she transferred to the education department for a little over a year. In September 2025, she took the position of manager of ambulatory services, serving the hospital’s primary care clinics.

“Becky exemplifies the compassion, dedication and excellence that define extraordinary nursing,” said Karla Tucker, chief nursing officer and director of nursing at WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital. “She consistently goes above and beyond for her patients and their families, and we are incredibly proud to recognize her with the DAISY Award. This honor is a wonderful reflection of the difference Becky makes in the lives of those she cares for each day.”

In addition to Perry, St. Joseph’s recognized the other DAISY Award nominees for their exceptional care and dedication to patients: Jessica Bennet, RN; Sarah Knicely, RN; Jessica Reep, RN; Sydney Shoemaker, RN; and Rachael Thrain, LPN. Each nominee was honored for exemplifying the compassion, professionalism and excellence that define nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Perry was celebrated by colleagues during a special recognition presentation, where she received a DAISY Award certificate and commemorative pin.
