Pedestrian killed Friday after being hit by a car on Tallmansville Road

BUCKHANNON – An Upshur County man was killed Friday in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian wreck on Tallmansville Road.

According to a press release from the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, the pedestrian, David W. Knight, 43, of Buckhannon, passed away from incapacitating injuries after being struck by a vehicle during the accident, which occurred just before 8 p.m. March 4.

The sheriff’s release states that at 7:50 p.m. March 4, deputies responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian incident on Tallmansville Road just past Norvell Drive and saw a white male lying in the roadway.

When deputies arrived on scene, bystanders were performing CPR on Knight, the victim, but when Upshur EMS assessed the victim, he was determined deceased at the scene.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing any information about the driver due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, chief deputy Mike Coffman told My Buckhannon Monday.

“The name of the driver is not being released at this time due to ongoing investigation,” the release states. “During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the victim was in the roadway at the time he was struck by the vehicle. It is believed drugs and/or alcohol played a factor in this accident.”

Coffman confirmed alcohol and/or drug use was suspected on the part of the victim, not the driver.

In addition to the sheriff’s office and Upshur EMS, Buckhannon Fire Department and Washington District Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the scene.

Lt. Marshall Powers is the investigating officer.
