Dr. Susan Long receives WVSOM Outstanding Preceptor Award

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital is honored to announce that Dr. Susan Long, general surgeon, has been named the 2026 Outstanding Preceptor Award recipient for the Central East Region by the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM).

Each year, WVSOM presents Outstanding Preceptor Awards to physicians across its statewide campus regions. Awards are given to one primary care physician and one non-primary care specialist in each region. Recipients are nominated by medical students in recognition of their dedication to teaching, mentoring and shaping the next generation of physicians.

The Central East Region includes communities throughout central West Virginia, including Buckhannon, Elkins, Weston, Bridgeport and Morgantown.

The Outstanding Preceptor Award recognizes physicians who demonstrate professionalism, excellence in patient care and a strong commitment to medical education. Award recipients serve as positive role models, exemplifying the principles of osteopathic medicine and the values reflected in the Hippocratic Oath while investing in the development of future healthcare providers.

Dr. Long was selected by students for her commitment to clinical education and mentorship, providing meaningful learning experiences that help prepare future physicians for successful careers in medicine.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Long for receiving this well-deserved recognition,” said John Forester, interim president and CEO. “Her dedication to both her patients and the education of future physicians reflects the high standards of excellence and compassion that define WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital.”

As a respected surgeon, Dr. Long has made a lasting impact on both the patients she serves and the students she mentors. This recognition underscores the important role community physicians play in training the next generation of healthcare professionals while delivering exceptional care close to home.
