Number of active COVID cases in West Virginia tops 3,000 for the first time since February

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 3,002 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 113 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (46), Barbour (22), Lewis (20), Randolph (19) and Webster (20) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of two active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 83-year old female from Marion County, a 95-year old male from Kanawha County, and a 91-year old female from Cabell County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of July 15, 2022, there are currently 3,002 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been three deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 7,102 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 311 residents are hospitalized with the virus, with 38 currently in intensive care and seven on a ventilator. The daily percent positive was 9.51%. 

About 55% of the state has been vaccinated for COVID-19.
