Number of active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia surges above 5,000 on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 5,076 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 451 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (143), Barbour (38), Lewis (80), Randolph (109) and Webster (26) counties, according to the DHHR. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 17 active cases in the last 24 hours.

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 84-year old female from Raleigh County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of August 12, 2021, there have been 3,198,891 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 171,707 total cases and 2,975 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 5.28%.

A total of 890,064 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 50% of the state.
