No injuries suffered in Tuesday wreck, but police testing driver for controlled substances

BUCKHANNON – No injuries were reported during a one-vehicle car wreck on Route 20 at the intersection of Three Lick Road Tuesday morning.

According to the State of West Virginia uniform traffic report filed by investigating officer Chief Deputy Mike Coffman with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, Thomas Denney, 34, of Philippi, was driving a red 2012 Ford Focus traveling north on Route 20 at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Denney told law enforcement officers he lost control of his vehicle, ran off the roadway, traveled over an embankment, and continued downhill through approximately 200 feet of cornfield before coming to rest in a creek.

According to the report, Denney’s license was revoked, and Coffman suspected Denney was under the influence of drugs during the accident, but no charges were filed pending the results of a test for controlled substances.
