McGrew scores 22 as ‘Cats end year with 82-69 setback to D&E

BUCKHANNON, W.Va.– The West Virginia Wesleyan (2-26, 1-21) men’s basketball team concluded their season Saturday against the Davis & Elkins Senators (8-20, 6-16) in their final game of the year inside Rockefeller Center. The Bobcats honored its two seniors, Braeden McGrew and Tommie Pope in the finale. The Senators took the contest 82-69.

McGrew drained five threes (5-for-10) in his final game in the Orange & Black. McGrew tallied 22 points in total and grabbed six rebounds. Ike Dove shot 66.7% from the field (10-for-15) on his way to a season-high 20 points. Dove grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Leaders for Davis & Elkins
Ben Gilliam had a game-high 27 points for the Senators. Gilliam added 11 rebounds to secure a double-double. Sam Rolle IV tallied 21 points on 8-17 shooting (47.1%). The Senators shot 51.7% from the field as a team (31-for-60) and outrebounded the Bobcats 43-33.
 
Inside the First Half
Dove scored the Orange & Black’s first six points going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. The Senators would go on a 10-1 run before Dove would cash in on another basket deep in the post. McGrew hit his first three of the contest with 14:03 left in the half to make it a 20-12 game. McGrew connected again from deep with 11:51 in the opening half as he splashed in a three from the left wing to make it 23-17 Senators.
 
The Bobcats cut it to five with seven to play after McGrew took the Pope pass and finished at the rim to make it 28-23 D&E. Coming out of the under-five media timeout, McGrew drilled his third triple of the opening half to bring the Orange & Black within four. McGrew scored 14 first-half points as the Bobcats went into the locker room down 35-31.
 
Inside the Second Half
Dove hit his patented hook shot over his left should open the scoring in the second half. However, consecutive Senator baskets forced head coach Derek Sloan into a timeout. Daunte Gardner responded out of the timeout, as he slashed to the cup to make it 39-35 Senators. The Senators would outscore the Bobcats 14-4 over the next 2:20 before the Orange & Black took another timeout. McGrew would help the Bobcats chip away at the deficit, as he connected on a three with 12:54 remaining to make it 53-42 Senators. After a flurry of offensive rebounds by the Bobcats, Anthony Craven Jr. finished at the rim and was fouled during the play to make it 63-55. The Senators remained in control the rest of the way, holding on for the 13-point victory.
