Lady Bucs fail to score in first quarter and fall in sectional opener to University, 72-37

MORGANTOWN – A scoreless first quarter erased any hope of an upset for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs in their sectional tournament opener with the homestanding University Hawks Wednesday night.

The Lady Bucs, the fourth seed in the sectional tournament, failed to score in the first quarter and were down 31-1 in the second quarter to the top-seeded Hawks en route to a 72-37 loss.

B-U went down 15-0 and didn’t score until the 5:24 mark of the second quarter on a free throw by Alyssa Abel.

The Lady Bucs were down 31-1 before Hodge’Nay Henderson scored on a lay-up with 90 seconds left in the half.

B-U went into the break down by a 41-6 score.

Down 52-7, the Lady Bucs put together a 6-0 run behind baskets from Harley Dean, Casadie Lahman and Kyndal Davis to make it a 52-13 contest

Buckhannon-Upshur trailed at the end of the third quarter by a 62-18 score.

The Lady Bucs scored more points in the fourth quarter, at 19, than they did in the first three quarters against University’s bench.

Down 69-26, Buckhannon-Upshur went on a 9-0 run getting a putback from Davis, consecutive baskets from Dean and an old-fashioned three-point play from Abel making it a 69-35 contest.

Makenzie Egress wrapped up the scoring with a lay-up with 25 seconds left.

Hannah Stemple led University with 14 points while Whitney Cox had nine.

University went on to defeat Preston for the sectional championship on Friday.

University (14-10) will host Morgantown (15-8) in a regional semifinal on Thursday.

Lahman and Dean paced the B-U offense with eight points each while Abel had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bucs closed out their year with a 4-17 mark.
