I-79 North closed at Goshen Road for pavement repairs after tractor-trailer crash

Pavement repairs are underway and northbound I-79 is closed at Goshen Road after a tractor-trailer crash and fire damaged the bridge, prompting officials to urge work zone safety following recent fatal accidents.

Northbound Interstate 79 will be closed overnight at the bridge just past the Goshen Road Exit (Exit 146) for pavement repairs in the work zone.

A tractor-trailer crashed on the bridge early in the morning of Monday, June 30, 2025, and burst into flames. Emergency crews got the fire out and West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) work crews got the truck moved and the debris cleared.

However, the cleanup revealed that the pavement had been damaged by the fire. The work zone will be closed through Tuesday, July 1, 2025, to allow crews to dig up the damaged pavement and repave the section of road.

During repairs, northbound traffic will detour off the Goshen Road exit and immediately back onto I-79 just past the bridge.

There have been several crashes in the Goshen Road work zone. The WVDOH urges drivers to pay attention to posted speed limits in work zones, slow down, and to put down their cell phones.

“All across the state, and even across the country, men and women will be working outside on roads,” said West Virginia Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh, P.E. Those men and women, he said, will be working inches away from cars and trucks zipping past, sometimes protected only by a thin orange line of safety cones and the trust that motorists will heed flashing lights and signs restricting speeds to 55 mph.

“While many take notice, many more do not, often leading to tragic outcomes,” Rumbaugh said.

On Monday, April 14, 2025, James Dean Harper was patching potholes on the West Virginia Turnpike when a distracted tractor-trailer driver hit Harper in the work zone, killing him. Harper was 24.

He left behind a wife and infant child.
