BUCKHANNON — “Funny Money” opens Oct. 22 at West Virginia Wesleyan College, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22-24 and a 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 24. All four shows are in the Virginia Thomas Law Performing Arts Center.

General admission costs $10. Seniors, students and members of the Wesleyan community pay $5. Admission is free for high school students and their families attending the college’s admissions open house Oct. 24. For show information, email mach@wvwc.edu.

Associate professor Dr. Greg Mach directs the Department of Theatre and Dance production of British playwright Ray Cooney’s farce. The two-hour play centers on accountant Henry A. Perkins, who accidentally picks up a money-filled briefcase and decides to keep the cash and flee to Barcelona.

“This poor guy wants to get away with this money he found, and everything piles up around him to hilariously keep him from his happy ending. The jokes come fast and often, and it’s a real door-slamming comedy full of unforgettable characters,” Mach said in a release from the college.

John Spellman of Fairmont, West Virginia, plays Henry Perkins, and Anna Lohmann of Morgantown, West Virginia, plays Jean Perkins. Rhyan Sebring of Caldwell, Ohio, plays Billie, while Ben Gerhart of Bridgeport, West Virginia, takes the role of Davenport.

Director of technical theatre Boyd Wolz designed the scenery, and Jody Wolz designed the costumes. Aiden Brown of Buckhannon, West Virginia, serves as crew chief.

“The script is over 150 pages. It’s a wild ride for the audience, but also the cast and crew because they have to memorize so much – it’s like putting on two plays at once,” Mach said.
