Former federal corrections officer admits to taking bribes

A former corrections officer at Federal Corrections Institution (FCI) Morgantown has admitted to accepting bribes from inmates in exchange for contraband, announced U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Harvey.

Elaina Massey, 41, of Roanoke, West Virginia, pled guilty to bribery of a public official. According to filed court documents and statements made in court, when Massey worked as a correctional officer at FCI Morgantown, she was allowing prisoners to keep cell phones, and providing new phones, alcohol and tobacco, in exchange for payments from inmates. Massey collected more than $20,000 from inmates.

Massey is facing up to 15 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Department of Justice Office of Inspector General investigated. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided.
