Five deaths, 17 new cases of COVID-19 reported in West Virginia on Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 17 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Five additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:

  • A 52-year old male from Jefferson County
  • A 75-year old male from Berkeley County
  • An 84-year old female from Pendleton County
  • An 82-year old female from Jefferson County
  • An 88-year old male from Jefferson County

“As we extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones, we also encourage all West Virginians to take every precaution to prevent the spread of this disease,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary, in a press release.

New cases were reported Friday in Berkeley, Clay, Fayette, Hampshire, Hardy, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Mineral and Monongalia counties.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on June 5, 2020, there have been 108,453 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 2,119 total cases and 84 deaths,” according to the release.

About 590 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 1,445 people have recovered and 84 have died, a mortality rate of about 5.5 percent.
