BUCKHANNON – A small fire broke out Tuesday morning on the first floor of the East Main Street building that burned in a large blaze in early October, but firefighters say the incident did not appear to have caused any additional significant damage.

Career firefighter Ethan Smith with the Buckhannon Fire Department said no one was present inside the roped-off building Tuesday morning when firefighters were paged out at about 9 a.m. in a light drizzle.

Smith said firefighters don’t believe the fire to be suspicious in nature, but the investigation has been turned over to the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s officials, who were already on their way to Buckhannon Tuesday afternoon.

“At about 9 a.m., they toned us about, and when we got there, there was a small amount of fire and smoke visible through the window on the Spring Street side of the building in an office on the first floor,” he said. “The fire was contained to that office. There wasn’t much more damage than what there already was, so we searched building to make sure no one was in there and made sure fire wasn’t anywhere else.”

“It’s not suspicious at this time, but it’s been turned over to the state fire marshal’s office,” Smith added.

During the approximately one hour they were on scene, firefighters determined the fire had not spread to other areas of the structure.

The building at 23-23 B East Main Street, which stands at the corner of Spring and Main streets, was declared a total loss following the Oct. 5 fire, which is believed to have originated in the attic of the original structure. Its owner, Travis Foster, told My Buckhannon he plans to have the structure demolished within the next 30-45 days.

The Buckhannon Police Department assisted with traffic control during Tuesday’s incident.
