Fairmont State’s Town and Gown Players to hold open auditions for ‘Come From Away’

Fairmont State University’s Town and Gown Players have announced open auditions for a production of Come From Away, a musical about the days following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The play will be performed at Fairmont State’s Wallman Theatre and runs June 19 through June 26. The production will be directed by Troy Snyder.

Come From Away, written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, tells the story of how 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, after U.S. airspace was closed in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The population of the small, isolated town effectively doubled overnight. The musical follows the interactions between the stranded passengers and the residents who opened their homes and hearts to provide food, shelter and support.

“Fairmont State’s Town and Gown Players are excited and honored to be one of the first theatre companies in West Virginia to produce Come From Away, which, at this moment, is one of the most popular shows in the world,” the company said in announcing auditions.

Because of the global nature of the story, the cast requires a diverse mix of actors, 18 and older, who each play multiple characters. Audition requirements can be found on Google Drive.

Questions can be directed to the Town and Gown Players’ Facebook page or to Leigh.riley@fairmontstate.edu.
