Day 1: MEC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championship

Wheeling leads the men’s field after round one of the 2025 Mountain East Conference Golf Championship at Glade Springs while Charleston holds the early lead on the women’s side as the three-round event continues.

DANIELS, W.Va. – The 2025 Mountain East Conference Men’s and Women’s Golf Championship concluded the opening round of play Monday at the Cobb Course at the Resort at Glade Springs. The men’s championship began at 8 a.m., and after 18 holes, Wheeling sits atop the team leaderboard at +9, four strokes ahead of defending champion University of Charleston. On the women’s side, Charleston has built an early lead over defending champion Glenville State.

The three-day, three-round event continues Tuesday morning at 8 a.m., with the women scheduled to tee off first. The men’s second round is tentatively scheduled to begin at noon. Upon conclusion of Tuesday’s play, the top six teams advance to Wednesday’s third and final round, as well as the top three individual scorers who are not on an advancing team.

The 54-hole event concludes Wednesday. A team and individual champion will be crowned in both men’s and women’s, and the top five finishers on each side will be named to the all-tournament team.

MEN’S TOURNAMENT

UC’s Joan Panisello and Point Park’s Milo Thim are tied atop the men’s leaderboard after one round at -2. Wheeling teammates Zak Collins and Sean Dobson also finished the first round under par at -1. Panisello, a junior from Spain, opened the front and back nine with a bogey, but otherwise played flawless with four birdies and 12 pars. He recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6.  Thim, a freshman from Sweden, opened with birdies on three of his first five holes. He finished the first round with five birdies and three bogeys.

A trio of players are tied for fifth at +1.

Collins and Dobson propelled the Cardinals to the top of the team leaderboard after 18 holes at +9. Charleston sits in second at +13, followed by Glenville State (+19), Fairmont State (+20), West Liberty (+22), Concord (+26), Davis & Elkins (+27), Point Park (+27), West Virginia State (+32), and West Virginia Wesleyan (+33).

WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT

Charleston took command in the first round after the performances of individual leader, Mari Filippa Larsen, and teammate Gabrielle Harrison, who is two shots back after 18 holes. Larsen shot a +5 77, which included birdies at Nos. 5 and 15. Harrison birdied No. 16. Harrison was equaled by West Virginia Wesleyan’s Isabella Briceno’s +7 79 in Round 1. Davis & Elkins’ Marina Saviceva-Noti and Glenville State’s Elaina Seeley each posted 80 on the first day to round out the top five.

UC is +34 as a team — seven shots ahead of Glenville State (+41). Fairmont State is third at +93, edging out Davis & Elkins, which is +96. From there, the team leaderboard features Concord (+104), Wheeling (+126), West Virginia Wesleyan (+137), and West Liberty (+175).
