Davis House celebrates 10 years of love

Elkins, WV – On Thursday, September 8, 2022, The Davis House in Elkins will celebrate its 10th year of service.  Since 2012, this house has been a place of comfort, love, and support for nearly 800 cancer patients and their families.

To commemorate the Anniversary, a community Blessing of the Bricks will take place at 5:00 pm followed by tours of the Davis House and light refreshments. Installation of several new commemorative bricks will be laid in Legacy Lane.  Bricks are purchased by families, businesses and clubs to honor and memorialize loved ones.

“For 10 years the house has been open 365 days, 7 seven days a week,” said Davis Health System CEO Vance Jackson. “Those who have stayed at the Davis House understand, first-hand, what a critical service this is to patients and families of our Cancer Center.”

Jackson explained that the Davis House provides complimentary lodging with free on-site laundry, parking, and easy access to six one-and-two bed suites with private bath and kitchenette, sitting area and internet.

DMC Cancer Center Director Duane Boyce, B.S., CMD, RT (R)(T) said in addition to the Davis House, the Davis Health System Foundation provides gas cards, medication assistance, and other patient care enhancements to more than 300 cancer patients each year.

“The support from the community for our patients is genuinely appreciated.  All funds and donations (of care items) to the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund are shared with local patients, they all stay in our community,” said Boyce.

DHS Foundation Director Mike Bell added that in the 10 years since opening, The Davis House has provided more than 4,000 nights of complimentary lodging so that families did not need to travel during cancer treatment.  He also explained that through a partnership with Mountain Valley Bank, each cancer patient receives a LiveWell kit with skincare products and information.

“Cancer care is truly a community effort with clubs, churches, and volunteers providing prayer shawls, blankets, gift bags and other wish list items. This generosity makes it possible to have lodging and other services at no cost,” shared Bell.
