Davis & Elkins Plans Convocation, March to Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

ELKINS – Davis & Elkins College will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a convocation, march and reflection on Monday, January 20. All activities are free and open to the public.

The convocation begins at 3:30 p.m. in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium with featured speaker Kobey Quamina and participation by the Davis & Elkins College Black Student Union and Director of Career Services Chris Jones. D&E Director of Campus Activities and Multicultural Programs Jonathan Barrett will serve as MC.

Quamina’s speech is titled “Attaining the Dream Through Vision.” A Baltimore, Maryland, native and current resident of Wheeling, Quamina is a member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration committee for the city of Wheeling. Professionally, she works in resident life at Wheeling University where she is pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business finance. During her undergraduate career, Quamina served several roles in the University’s Black Student Union including two terms as president.

Immediately after the convocation, a short march highlighting Dr. King’s life will take place from the auditorium, through campus to Madden Student Center. Barrett will lead a reflection in Timms Lounge and a birthday cake prepared by the College’s Dining Services will be served to guests.

School bus crashes on Route 20 after hitting black ice; one child taken to hospital

A school bus carrying 25 students slid on black ice on Route 20 Wednesday morning and went off the road, according to Upshur County Sheriff Mike Coffman. All students were checked at the scene, and one child was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with minor injuries.
