Calef-Boring, Marple and Bennett named to Big 10 All-Conference Baseball Team

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers landed three players on the 2023 Big 10 All-Conference Baseball Team.

Zach Calef-Boring and Landon Marple made the First Team while Payton Bennett was honored on the Second Team.

Calef-Boring, a senior, was named to the First Team as a pitcher.

He led the Bucs on the mound pitching a team-high 45 2/3 innings while posting a 2-1 record with a team-best 2.29 earned run average. He struck out 45 batters and walked just 16.

At the plate, he led the team in batting average with a .433 average collecting 39 hits in 90 at-bats with eight doubles, two triples and two home runs. He scored a team-high 40 runs and drove in 28.

Marple, a sophomore, was named to the First Team as an outfielder.

He was second on the team in batting average hitting .388 getting 33 hits in 85 at-bats. He led the team in runs-batted-in with 29 and in home runs with four.

Bennett, a senior, was named to the Second Team as an outfielder.

He hit .329 getting 24 hits 73 at-bats with four doubles while driving in 14.

“All three guys are deserving of their honors,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires. “With Zach and Landon making First Team, as soon as we put their name up everybody was voting for them. Coaches recognize players who put in the work and all three have for us this season.”

North Marion’s Cole Malnick was named the Big 10 Player of the Year while East Fairmont’s Connor Tingler was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year. Fairmont Senior’s Dave Ricer was named as Coach of the Year.
