The savannah is coming to life as Buckhannon Community Theatre prepares to present Disney’s The Lion King Kids on June 20 and 21 at the Colonial Arts Center.
Part of the McNeish Family Memorial Youth Theatre Summer Camp, this vibrant production features young performers who have spent the past days learning, rehearsing, and creating a magical theatrical experience that’s perfect for all ages. Performances will be held Friday, June 20, at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, June 21, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Tickets are just $5 and available at the Chamber and Visitors Center next to CJ Maggie’s. Seating is limited.
The production is directed by Ella McNeish, who grew up in theater and is now dedicated to sharing its impact with a new generation.
“Growing up in theater has profoundly shaped my perspective and values,” McNeish said. “The experiences I gained on stage, the thrill of embodying different characters, the joy of working as part of a team to create something beautiful, and the transformative power of performance have been invaluable.”
Now, McNeish is focused on helping young performers build the same confidence and passion she developed.
“I am motivated to pass on the gift of theater to the next generation, aiming to provide young individuals with the same opportunities for growth, connection and self-discovery,” she said.
Young actors are equally enthusiastic about the production. Charlotte Clay, who plays a hyena in the show, is excited to step onto the stage.
“I get to chase Timon and Pumbaa,” she said with a smile. “I get to eat Scar and do this little dance with him.”
Though she was previously in The Nutcracker, this is her first speaking role, and she’s loving every minute of it.
“I like everything about theater — the costumes, the people, the dancing,” she said.
Maya Carr, who plays Rafiki, is returning for her second year at the youth theater camp.
“What’s exciting is just watching it come alive,” Carr said. “I love talking with my friends and watching all the monkeys.”
She added that the inclusive and fun atmosphere is what brought her back this summer.
“Everyone got a spot, and it was fair to everyone.”
