Basketball Lady ‘Cats pick up 71-61 win at D&E to wrap up regular season

ELKINS — The West Virginia Wesleyan College women’s basketball team will be the No. 9 seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament after its 71-61 regular season win over Davis and Elkins College, Saturday.

With a slow start that had the Senators up 14-11 after one quarter, Wesleyan posted a 54 percent field goal completion rate in the second and went up by two with 6:17 remining in the half on a three-pointer by Cadence Stewart. The Lady Bobcats would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.

Though weaker on the usual strength of its rebounds against the Senators with a 22-29 disadvantage, the Lady Bobcats shined from beyond the deep stripe, hitting 7-of-11 for 64 percent to Davis and Elkins’ 46 percent.

Shelby Genes led the Lady Bobcats with 14 points including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Wesleyan’s No. 1 and No. 2 shooters in total points, Emma Witt (338) and Sydney Baird (325) each added 13 points. Courtney Wilfong scored 11 points and had six rebounds.

Wesleyan enters the 2024 Mountain East Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament as the No. 9 seed and will begin play at the WesBanco Arena in Wheeling on Wednesday, March 6 against the No. 8 seed West Liberty Hilltoppers. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
