Baseball ‘Cats get blanked twice by Glenville State in MEC doubleheader

GLENVILLE — The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats baseball ran into strong pitching and timely run production from Glenville State on Friday afternoon, as the Pioneers swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from the Bobcats at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.

Glenville State took the opener, 3-0, behind a complete-game shutout from Zach Dellerman, then pulled away late in game two for a 13-0 victory. With the results, Wesleyan moved to 9-35 overall, while Glenville State improved to 24-18.

Glenville State struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Adam Bright drew a walk, Zach Laurie followed with another walk, and Colby Guy delivered the big swing of the inning with a two-run double to left center to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

Wesleyan’s best offensive chance came in the top of the sixth. Carter Collins opened the inning with a single to left, and Chase Gora followed with a single to right to put two runners aboard with nobody out. Dellerman responded by striking out the next two batters before getting a groundout to escape the threat.

The Pioneers added their third run in the fifth when Bright reached on an error, Ashton Crace doubled to right center, and Laurie singled down the right-field line to score Bright. Wesleyan turned a clean double play in the sixth, with Collins, Grant Shumaker and Matthew Neach combining to erase a leadoff baserunner.

Collins and Gora collected Wesleyan’s two hits in the opener, while Alex Smith and Josiah Segura each drew a walk. Mann worked five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, two earned, while walking three and striking out two. Alex Hernandez handled the final inning for the Bobcats and did not allow a hit, inducing a double play after a leadoff hit batter.

Dellerman earned the win for Glenville State, throwing seven innings and allowing just two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

In game two, Glenville State again jumped ahead early and then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning and six-run sixth.

Wesleyan had an early scoring opportunity in the first when Matthew Neach doubled down the right-field line with two outs, but the Bobcats were unable to bring him home. The Bobcats also threatened in the third after Coleman Cross singled to left center and Shumaker followed with a single to right. Chase Gora reached on a fielder’s choice, and Matthew Neach reached on an error to load the bases, but Glenville State escaped with the shutout intact.

Wesleyan finished with four hits in the second game. Shumaker, Matthew Neach, Drew Jrolf and Cross each had one hit, with Matthew Neach’s first-inning double serving as the Bobcats’ lone extra-base hit of the day. Gora and Lough each stole a base, and Lough also reached on a walk and a hit by pitch.

Hernandez took the loss for Wesleyan after throwing five innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Nolan Slaughter and Davis Weppler worked in relief.

Grant Landis earned the win for Glenville State, throwing six scoreless innings with four hits allowed, one walk and four strikeouts. Adrian Orozco finished the seventh for the Pioneers.

Bright led Glenville State’s offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBIs, including a home run and a double. Crace added three hits and two RBIs, while Meadows went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
