Baseball ‘Cats drop two at home to Frostburg State

BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Wesleyan-Frostburg State battled in a doubleheader Saturday and game one began with some early back-and-forth action. Frostburg State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run, unearned homer by Doyle McNew, scoring Mikey Guy. West Virginia Wesleyan responded in the bottom half of the frame, as Thatcher Poteat doubled home Ethan Fraley to make it 2-1.

Frostburg extended its lead in the fifth inning. McNew singled home Guy, followed by a sacrifice fly from Jake Holler that brought in McNew, pushing the lead to 4-1. The Bobcats then exploded for a five-run inning in the sixth. Manny Hall delivered a grand slam, bringing in Jackson Schalick, Brian Scott, and C.J. Carmichael unearned. The blast put Frostburg State up 8-1.

West Virginia Wesleyan mounted a small rally in the sixth inning, scoring two runs. A single by Alex Smith drove in Grant Shumaker, and a sacrifice fly by Kohei Fujishita brought in Poteat, cutting the deficit to 8-3. However, the Bobcats’ offense could not produce any further runs, and Frostburg held strong to secure the win.

Game two saw Frostburg State take a 6-0 lead after play ended in the top of the fifth.

Jack Tilton hit a sacrifice fly for Wesleyan in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-1 game.

Down 7-1, Grant Shumaker hit a sacrifice fly to wrap up the scoring for Wesleyan.
