B-U to host Bridgeport Tuesday in sectional opener

TENNERTON – The seedings for the boys’ high school basketball sectional and regional tournament were announced on Tuesday.

The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers, with a 9-12 overall record, were ranked fourth in Class AAAA Region 1 and the second seed in the Region 1, Section 2 side.

In Section 2, the Bucs finished 2-1, beating Preston (78-54) and Bridgeport (53-40), but falling to University (74-32). University earned the top seed while Bridgeport was third and Preston was seeded fourth.

The Bucs will host Bridgeport on Tuesday at 7 p.m. while University will host Preston on the same day and time on the other side of the Section 2 tournament. The two winners will meet at the highest-seeded team remaining on Thursday at 7 p.m.

On the other side of the regional in Section 1, Morgantown is the top seed followed by Wheeling Park, John Marshall and Brooke. Morgantown will host Brooke while Wheeling Park will host John Marshall. Both games will be played on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as well with their sectional title game slotted for Friday at the highest seed.

The overall regional seedings had Morgantown first, University second, Wheeling Park third, Buckhannon-Upshur fourth, Bridgeport fifth, John Marshall sixth, Brooke seventh and Preston eighth.

The Bucs were 3-2 in the region, defeating Wheeling Park (along with Bridgeport and Preston) but losing to Morgantown (and University).

Region 1 currently has two teams in the Top 10 in Class AAAA, according to the latest AP rankings as Morgantown is second and University is seventh.
