West Virginia Wesleyan opened its fall golf season at the Vulcan Invitational, with the men placing 11th and the women competing individually. Caleb Fairhurst led the Bobcats at 7-over, while McKenna Knotts paced the Lady Bobcats at 31-over.
Buckhannon-Upshur found its rhythm with sweeps of Doddridge County and Fairmont Senior in a 2-1 showing at the Lewis County quad. The Lady Bucs improved to 5-7 after delivering what coach Jessica McQuain called their best volleyball yet.

Chloe Lewis and Carter Haney are the Hank Ellis All-Stars for Aug. 31–Sept. 6. Lewis led the Lady Bucs to a cross-country team title at home, while Haney anchored the boys’ soccer defense in two shutout wins.
Audrey Johnston won Buckhannon-Upshur’s home invitational by more than 30 seconds, finishing in 14:53.2. Taylor Wright placed fourth as the Little Lady Bucs took second behind Elkins.
Felix Stump won the B-U Invitational boys’ title in 12:34.8, leading Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School to a runaway team victory. The Little Bucs placed three runners in the top four and scored 29 points, well ahead of Lincoln’s 75.
Buckhannon-Upshur blanked Oak Hill 4-0 for its third straight shutout and victory, improving to 3-2. Coby Smith scored twice, while Brody Wright added a goal and two assists as the Bucs allowed only two shots on frame.
Buckhannon-Upshur struck first on Rylen Carlyle’s early goal but surrendered four unanswered in a 4-1 loss at undefeated Hurricane, its first defeat of the season. Bella Nottingham made 18 saves, including a penalty stop.
Upshur County’s Sept. 7-13 sports calendar features Buckhannon-Upshur and West Virginia Wesleyan teams competing in football, soccer, golf, volleyball, cross country and tennis. Labor Day has no scheduled events.
Buckhannon-Upshur overcame a 90-minute rain delay and combined race to finish second at its home invitational with 71 points. Mitchell Whitley led the Buccaneers, placing third in 19:10.8, while Kenton Stump and Lucas Fortney also cracked the top 10.
