Howard Curry Martin

Howard Curry Martin, 73, of Volga, W.Va., died Friday, May 14, 2021 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born July 23, 1947 in Haywood, W.Va., a son of the late Ross and Nellie Curry Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jane Arocho; two brothers, Mike and Patrick Martin; one sister, Jo Ellen Slusser and one sister-in-law, Ethel Martin.

He is survived by his wife, Cassandra L. Walls Martin; two sons, Howard A.C. Martin and wife Allison of Jane Lew, W.Va. and Yancy V. Martin and wife Kelsie of Reader, W.Va.; one daughter, Stacie Freeman and husband Nathan of Shinnston, W.Va.; one step-son, Michael Childers and fiancé Jamie of Buckhannon, W.Va.; one step-daughter, April Heintz and fiancé Craig of Southerland, Va.; six grandsons, Eric Holmes and wife Jessica of Raleigh, N.C., Dustin Martin of Charleston, W.Va., Seth Freeman and wife Laci of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Caleb Freeman of Shinnston, W.Va., Travis Martin of W.Va. and Case Martin of Reader, W.Va.; three granddaughters, Tasha Alderman and husband Josh of Dothan, Ala., Chelsey Nicole Parker and husband Henry of Greenville, N.C. and Cherokee Martin of Fairmont, W.Va.; five step-grandchildren, Brayden, Kayleigh, Payton, Kaylee and Mackenzie; four great-grandsons, Blake Alderman of Dothan, Ala., Cole Alderman of Dothan, Ala., Logan Freeman of Bruceton Mills, W.Va. and Kingston Martin of Fairmont, W.Va.; two great-granddaughters, Hadley Alderman of Dothan, Ala. and Nora Parker of Greenville, N.C.; one sister, Vera Varca and husband Tim of Shinnston, W.Va.; one brother-in-law, Larry Walls of Buckhannon W.Va.; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Denis and Linda Whitaker of Volga, W.Va. and beloved fur babies, Sheba and Brutus.

Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Army, was a coal miner and a Baptist by faith. He was an avid outdoorsman that loved animals, hunting and fishing. He also adored spending time with his family. In honoring Mr. Martin’s wishes, he will be cremated. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
