The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Sunday that 215 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, including four in Upshur County.
Randolph County reported nine new cases on Sunday, while Barbour County reported six. All three counties now have infection rates that are categorized in the “red alert” zone by the DHHR.
While Upshur County’s infection rate has declined slightly the last three days, Barbour and Randolph have both seen increases.
Ninety cases are currently active in Upshur County. Randolph County has 58 active cases and Barbour County has 107, according to the DHHR, although that the latter tally is nearly double the 58 active cases the Barbour County Health Department is reporting.
In-person schools will be closed in Upshur County again this week due to the recent outbreak.
Dr. Joseph Reed, Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department medical director, said the health department was aware of two church-related outbreaks in Upshur County as of Saturday evening. As of Friday, Reed said “several” individuals from Upshur County were hospitalized with COVID-19.
Free COVID-19 testing is available at Buckhannon-Upshur High School Sunday and Monday from noon to 6 p.m.
One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 71-year old female from Kanawha County.
“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., October 11, 2020, there have been 633,333 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 18,128 total cases and 382 deaths,” according to a press release.
New cases were reported Sunday in Barbour, Berkeley, Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Cabell, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Grant, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pendleton, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wetzel, Wood and Wyoming counties.
About 4,579 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 13,167 people have recovered and 382 have died. The daily percent positive was 2.71%.
