BUCKHANNON – Prepare yourself for all things curious and odd as the Upshur County Historical Society’s annual exhibit opens this summer.

Each summer, the UCHS organizes and creates a themed exhibit that tells the story of Upshur County’s past, free of charge to the public.

“We have covered just about every topic for Upshur County that there is,” said Noel W. Tenney, director of special projects. “From Civil War to World War I and II, the Depression era, communities, railroads, the river, people, children, occupations, agriculture. We’ve done it all over the last 29 years.”

With this being the 29th year of the exhibits, from today, Sunday, June 9, until Sunday, Sept. 29, the UCHS will present “An Upshur County Scrapbook of Unusual and Interesting People, Places, Events and other Curiosities” Sundays every Sunday from 1-4 p.m. The exhibit is located at the History Center Museum, 81 W. Main St.

“That last part is a play on what early museums were like, which was cabinets filled with curiosities,” Tenney explained.

As folks browse through the exhibit, they will find information-filled display units, old photographs that tell of the county’s past and newly-found artifacts.

“People have said ‘well, you don’t show very many artifacts,’” Tenney said. “Well we’re showing a lot of artifacts this year.”

Some of the ‘curious’ items exhibit-goers are sure to find engaging include the county’s various bridges that no longer exist; facts about the county’s first female photographer and teacher; the community’s unfortunate tragedies; pieces of Upshur’s folklore art; and various Upshur County treasures.

With roughly 1,000 hours invested in organizing and setting up the display, Tenney hopes community members and outside visitors find this year’s exhibit just as interesting as last year’s.

“We think it’s kind of a play on words, and I think there will be something for everybody,” he said.
