Upshur County Convention & Visitors Bureau seeking executive director

The Upshur County Convention & Visitors Bureau (UCCVB) seeks an energetic, creative and forward-thinking professional to lead the organization’s tourism development, marketing and community engagement. The Executive Director promotes Upshur County as a welcoming, authentic small-town destination and strengthens partnerships that support local businesses, events and regional tourism initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator, a collaborative partner and a self-motivated leader capable of managing multiple projects with limited direct supervision. This position requires a blend of marketing skills, community relationship-building and organizational management — including the ability to promote Upshur County’s growing portfolio of event venues and to attract meetings, retreats and small conventions.

Key Responsibilities

Community & Business Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with local businesses, civic groups and community organizations
  • Attend meetings and events to promote collaboration and gather input on tourism needs
  • Provide presentations to increase understanding of CVB goals and encourage broad support

Regional Collaboration

  • Work with neighboring CVBs and regional partners to promote shared tourism assets
  • Maintain accreditation with the West Virginia Association of CVBs
  • Participate in statewide and regional conferences to strengthen Upshur County’s visibility

Marketing & Promotion

  • Develop and implement an annual marketing plan
  • Manage the CVB’s website, social media presence and digital content
  • Create print and digital materials to promote local attractions and events
  • Support and help promote community events in partnership with event organizers
  • Market Upshur County’s event venues and local hotels and motels as appealing locations and lodging options for meetings, retreats, weddings and small conventions
  • Develop promotional materials and outreach strategies to attract conferences, organizational retreats and regional gatherings

Grant Development

  • Identify relevant grant opportunities at the state, federal and foundation levels
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals in collaboration with local and regional partners
  • Develop a long-term grant strategy to support tourism growth

Administration & Reporting

  • Work with the Board Treasurer to prepare and manage the annual budget
  • Provide monthly and annual reports to the Board and partner agencies
  • Maintain systems that ensure transparency, accountability and accurate record-keeping

Board Relations

  • Seek input from the Board and provide regular updates on activities and progress
  • Prepare an annual operations plan for Board review and approval
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Board of Directors

Qualifications

  • Experience or education in marketing, public relations, tourism, communications or a related field preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse partners
  • Familiarity with digital marketing, social media management or event promotion is a plus
  • Experience in venue marketing, event coordination or conference recruitment is beneficial but not required
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience and/or education in marketing and public relations

Compensation

  • Salary range: $30,000–$33,000 annually, based on current annual funding and
    commensurate with experience.
