Police across West Virginia will step up seat belt enforcement October 9–31. Officers will ticket drivers who are improperly buckled or transporting unrestrained children, according to a release from the West Virginia Department of Transportation.
The Click It or Ticket campaign brings local agencies together with the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
“Unbuckled drivers or passengers have a higher likelihood of being killed if they are in a crash,” Governor’s Highway Safety Program Director Jack McNeely said in the release.
The release reports 256 deaths on West Virginia roads in 2024. Of the 157 passenger vehicle occupants killed, nearly 44% were unrestrained. McNeely put statewide seat belt use at nearly 92%.
The campaign overlaps with Operation Crash Reduction October 9–12, a regional effort to reduce crashes, injuries and deaths during Columbus Day weekend.
My Buckhannon reported on an earlier seat belt enforcement campaign in May.
The release lists a $25 ticket for seat belt violations. Program information is available at highwaysafety.wv.gov or 304-926-2509.
