Patricia Ann “Patty” McComas, age 84, of Buckhannon, WV, died Monday, July 27, 2026, in hospice at Elkins, WV.
She was born November 2, 1941, in Huntington, WV, a daughter of the late James Woodrow and Mamie Victoria Adkins Fannin. On September 30, 1962, she married Hal Samuel “Sam” McComas III, who survives.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Hal Samuel McComas IV of Bloomsburg, PA; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Spencer and husband Bryan of Buckhannon; four granddaughters, Kaitlyn Victoria McComas, Victoria Ann Adams, Lilly Ann Spencer, and Hadley Ann Spencer, all of Buckhannon; one grandson, Andrew Morgan McComas of Kennett Square, PA; and one great-granddaughter, Emmerson Rose McComas of Buckhannon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny Dale Fannin and James Woodrow Fannin Jr.
Patty received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Marshall University in 1964 and received master’s degrees from WVU as a reading specialist and in school administration.
A lifelong educator, Patty served 43 years as a teacher and administrator. She began her career teaching in Cabell and Lincoln counties before moving to Upshur in 1977. She taught at Central Elementary and Buckhannon Upshur Intermediate School, then served as principal of French Creek Elementary for 26 years before retiring in 2008.
She enjoyed gardening, reading, volunteering, and taking care of her family. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was active with the United Methodist Women.
She enjoyed being part of the Fred Brooks and West Virginia Garden Clubs and spending time with friends as a Red Hatter.
Patty was a longtime supporter, board member, and president of both the Upshur Arts Alliance and Saint Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member and president of Alpha Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for women educators and was also a member of the AAUW and Upshur CEOs.
Friends will be received Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow there at 1 p.m. A private family burial will take place at Lincoln County Memorial Park in Hamlin, WV.
