John Jay Black

John Jay Black, age 78, of Buckhannon, WV, died Friday, June 19, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born January 22, 1948, in Buckhannon, a son of the late Elva and Ivy Koon Black. On April 7, 1967, he married Judie Osburn, who survives.

Also surviving are four children, Janice Howes and husband Richard of Lincolnton, NC, John Black and wife Samantha of McDonald, OH, Michael Black and wife Ginny of Buckhannon, and Rebecca Burr and fiancé Michael Donnellan of Buckhannon; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four siblings, Carolyn Brown, Russell Black, and Leona Dean all of Buckhannon and Ralph Black of Valley Bend, WV; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Matthew David Black, and four siblings, Homer, Arkie, Owen “Boone” Black, and Catherine Light.

Mr. Black was a heavy equipment operator and a truck driver. He retired from driving big rigs after millions of miles on the road and traveling the entire United States.

John was the President of the Recliner Club and enjoyed sitting—whether it was behind the wheel of a big rig, his lawn mower, or in his recliner. He was also a member of the Sand Run Baptist Church in Excelsior, WV.

Friends will be received Wednesday, June 24, 2026, from 11 AM to 12 PM (noon) at the Sand Run Baptist Church. A funeral service will take place at 12 PM (noon) at the church with Pastor Greg Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery.
