Upshur Public Library to close Aug 26-30 for carpet installation

BUCKHANNON – The Upshur County Public Library will be closed from Aug. 26 to Aug. 30 to replace the carpet on the first floor and the ramp.

Upshur County Public Library Assistant Director Tanner Lutz said the board decided to close the library during the replacement because there wouldn’t be room for visitors.

“We are installing new carpet, and there’s going to be a lot of people around, so there probably won’t be a lot of room for patrons to be in the building,” Lutz said. “We’ll be closed Monday through Friday; we’ll be back open Saturday, and we’ll be offering curbside service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while we’re closed.”

A Facebook post made by the Upshur County Public Library said services that will be offered curbside include checking out books, faxes and notaries. Guests can call 304-473-4219 to make sure the library is offering a needed service.

“When we come back, there won’t be anything out of the ordinary going on,” Lutz said. “We do have our chess club, storytime, toddler playtime — events that will not be occurring next week while we’re closed, but once we’re back open, everything should be back to normal.”

Upshur County Commission President Sam Nolte said the carpet replacement project was discussed during a previous budget session, and the commission is happy to see progress.

“I think everyone’s excited about it getting changed out,” Nolte said Friday. “The (UCPL) Board of Directors and the staff at the library are excited to get this new carpet on the first floor and the ramp.”

“They worked super hard on raising the money, and they came up with the plan to redo the parking lot with the landscaping and the beds, which was a big deal,” he added. “They had that in the works for several years, and it looks nice.”

The Upshur County Commission allocated $55,000 during their 2024-2025 fiscal year budget sessions, which was the highest they’ve been able to appropriate for the library since 2016.

More information about the library, their clubs, events and offerings can be found on their Facebook page. More information on the library’s new assistant director can be found on My Buckhannon.
