Multiple fatalities reported in early Monday morning fire in Lewis County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Multiple people have died in a fire in Lewis County, the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s office said Monday morning.

“Investigators with the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office are on the scene of a fire with multiple fatalities in Lewis County,” a press release issued Monday morning said. “The fire started early this morning in the area of Ireland, Lewis County.”

Deputy State Fire Marshal Robbie Bailey told WV Metro News that as many as four people may have died in the fire, which is considered suspicious.

“The WVSFMO is also looking into the possibility of this incident being connected to a death that occurred in Kanawha County earlier this morning,” the press release noted. “Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office deputies are handling that incident.”

Kanawha County Chief Deputy Joe Crawford told Metro News that a vehicle being sought in connection with the fire was found, and the occupant had died by suicide.
