TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs didn’t have any answers for Robert C. Byrd’s Carleigh Curotz in a 44-27 defeat Saturday afternoon in Big 10 Conference action.
Curotz had a game-high 25 points on a 10-for-11 shooting day for the Eagles, who began the week ranked ninth in Class AAA.
While Curotz couldn’t miss the Lady Bucs couldn’t connect as they shot just 28.2 percent making just 11 of their 39 field goal attempts, including going just 1-for-15 from behind the three-point stripe.
The B-U offense was cold out of the gate not scoring until the 2:41 mark of the first quarter on an Alyssa Abel baseline jumper.
That put B-U down by a 7-2 score and was the only field goal of the quarter for the team as they trailed by a 14-3 score after the first eight minutes of action.
Abel scored the first four points of the second quarter to bring the Lady Bucs to within seven, at 14-7, but Robert C. Byrd countered with seven unanswered points for a 21-7 lead with 2:55 remaining in the half.
Abel stopped the RCB run with a lay-up, but the Eagles ended the half on a 4-0 run for a 25-9 lead at the intermission.
B-U managed just two field goals in the third quarter, one from Abel and one from Kyndal Davis, and trailed heading into the fourth quarter by a 33-13 score.
Still down by 20, at 36-16, Brooklyn Smith nailed a three-pointer and Abel put in a short jumper bringing the Lady Bucs to within 15, at 36-21, with 6:19 remaining in the game.
B-U wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the contest.
Robert C. Byrd improved to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the Big 10 Conference
Buckhannon-Upshur, which was led by Abel’s 12 points and nine rebounds, fell to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the Big 10.
They will be back in action Tuesday hosting Philip Barbour in a conference outing at 7:30 p.m.
