Max (Sonny) Oris Hamner

Max (Sonny) Oris Hamner, age 89, formerly of Freedom, PA, and Steubenville, OH died peacefully on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the Iveagh Trust Personal Care Home in Elkins after a bout with cancer.

He was born on May 20, 1933, in Freeport, PA a son of the late Max and Almeda Helms Hamner.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Avis Allene Hamner. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by his companion of 24 years Judy Jackson, sister Alma McCray, grandson Jeffrey Hamner, nephew Terry Bender, and stepfather Henry Hamner.

He is survived by two daughters: Almeda (Midge) Hamner and Pam LeVasseur both of Elkins; two sons: Steve and wife Angie Hamner of Andersonville, TN, and Max (Kelly) Hamner Jr. of Parrottsville, TN; four grandchildren: Steve (Jen) Hamner of Monaca, PA, Amanda Brown of Beaver Falls, PA, Jeana Reed of Aulander, NC, Leah (Rich) Reinhart of Freedom, PA; several great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; four stepchildren: Vern, Bob, Keith, and Crystal Jackson; siblings: Alvilda Densmore, Sam Peck, Dorothy (John) Rice, Delmas Hamner and Patty Gregory, Linda (Kenny) Fitzgerald, and Ann.

Max served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He worked at Wycoff Steel Mill for thirty years and drove school bus for Rhodes Transit for several years. He loved to hunt, fish, and garden. His passion was playing music and square dancing.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 1:00 PM at the Center Chapel Church at French Creek with Pastor Nathan Forbes officiating. Interment will follow in the Center Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
