David H. Coffman

Former Sheriff David H. Coffman, age 69, of French Creek, died Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at his home.

He was born on September 17, 1953, in Buckhannon, a son of the late Joe Wade Coffman, Sr. and Doris Mae Dawson Coffman. On July 29, 1972, he was united in marriage to Sandra Morrison, who survives.  Together, they have two sons: Jeff Coffman and wife Cassie and Michael Coffman and wife Amy, both of Buckhannon; four grandchildren: Cori Brooke, Claire Olivia, John Evan, and Sarah Elizabeth; and one brother Joe Wade Coffman, Jr. and wife Linda of French Creek.

David graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School with the Class of 1972. From 1977-1988 he was a member of the Buckhannon Police Department, before joining the WV DNR in 1988, where he worked until 1990.  In October 1990, he began as Deputy with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and was later promoted to Sergeant, then Chief Deputy in 2005, a position he held until his retirement in 2011.

In Elkins, WV, he served as a Federal Court Security Officer from 2011-2012, then drove a school bus in Upshur County for a brief time before being elected as Sheriff of Upshur County in 2012, serving two terms before his final retirement in 2020.  He loved to hunt, fish, and play golf, and greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren in whatever sport they happened to be playing.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 2, 2022, from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM — the funeral hour, at the Buckhannon Alliance Church, with Pastor Mark Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Ridge Cemetery.

Online condolences may be extended to the Coffman family at www.heavnerandcutright.com. The Coffman family entrusted the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel with the arrangements.
