BUCKHANNON – State police arrested a woman on domestic battery charges Friday after she allegedly threw her hands in the air, exclaimed “I did it!” and told officers to take her to jail.
According to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s Office, Senior Trooper P.J. Robinette with the Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police was dispatched to a residence in Meadowlands Trailer Park in Buckhannon on Friday, Oct. 12, at 8:51 p.m. because of an alleged incident involving a disagreement between a male victim and his live-in girlfriend, 24-year-old Britteny Dien Grimes of Lost Creek.
The victim had previously informed the Upshur County Communication Center that Grimes allegedly hit him in the face and damaged several items in the residence in addition to the windows of his vehicle.
When Robinette arrived at the trailer, a witness and the victim informed him that Grimes had hit the victim, her boyfriend, on the side of his face. The officer also noted the rear window glass and driver’s side door window of the victim’s vehicle were both shattered.
According to his report, Robinette noticed that a front window of the trailer had been busted and that a damaged 75-inch flat screen television and Xbox 1 gaming system were lying on the trailer’s front steps. Robinette wrote that he could hear Grimes yelling from outside the residence, and upon entering, he found her standing in the kitchen.
Grimes then allegedly “threw her hands up in the air” and began to approach Robinette while yelling “Take me to jail! I did it!” the complaint states.
Robinette wrote that he decided detained Grimes “due to her erratic behavior.”
The complaint goes on to explain that Deputy Dewaine Linger with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department took Grimes into custody while Robinette took a statement from the victim.
In his statement, the victim said he’d arrived home from work around 7 p.m. and discovered that several pictures had been broken; Grimes wasn’t at home at that point, according to the report.
The victim then left the trailer to pick up a friend, and when he returned, Grimes came in soon after. She allegedly accused him of cheating on her about a week prior. She then allegedly began striking the TV “with her fists and feet” and proceeded to throw his gaming system out the door.
The victim and his friend left the trailer, but according to Robinette’s report, Grimes allegedly “began throwing items at his vehicle,” breaking the back glass and front driver’s side window.
She then allegedly walked up to the victim and told him she wanted to fight him and subsequently struck him with a closed fist on the right side of his face, according to the complaint.
After interviewing the victim’s friend, Robinette charged grimes with domestic battery.
Magistrate Kay Hurst arraigned Grimes Saturday from the Tygart Valley Regional Jail via video consent, setting bond $10,000 cash or surety and ordering Grimes to have no indirect or direct physical or verbal contact with the victim.
The penalty for a conviction of domestic battery is up to 12 months in jail, a fine of up to $500 or both.
