Lady Bobcats come up short against Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (2-9, 1-8) women’s basketball team dropped a road conference game at Frostburg State (11-4, 6-3) on Wednesday evening by a 57-51 at Bobcat Arena in Frostburg, Md.
 
WVWC Leaders
Malaika Kimmons tied a game-high in the points category with 14. Cierra Tolbert secured a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Courtney Wilfong reached double-figures with 10 points and dished out five assists. 
 
Frostburg State Leaders
Samiya Esema powered her way to 14 points and 18 rebounds, six coming from the offensive end. Arianna Briggs-Hall (13) and Niya Moore (11) both totaled double-figures in points.
 
Inside the First Half
Wesleyan ripped off an eight-point scoring run to open the game. Wilfong got the scoring started with a layup on WVWC’s first possession. Kimmons made two layups during the eight-point scoring spree. A Tolbert layup and a Symphonie Bryant-Brown three gave Wesleyan an 11 point lead halfway through the first quarter. Frostburg State closed the first quarter on a 5-0 run. The road team held a 13-7 lead at the end of one.
 
Frostburg tied the score at 15 with 5:11 left in the first half. Kimmons and Tolbert were the lone WVWC players to score in the second quarter, producing 10 points of offense. Frostburg State took a 27-23 lead at the end of the first half.
 
Inside the Second Half
The home team held their largest lead of the game at the 31-23 mark early in the third quarter. Wesleyan fought back and trimmed the lead to four points after a Wilfong layup assisted by Shelby Genes. Kimmons sank two free throws at the line to put WVWC within two points. Frostburg State led by eight points at the end of the third quarter. 
 
Wilfong swished two three-point baskets in the final quarter. Both three-point buckets cut the Frostburg’s lead to four points. WVWC outscored Frostburg State 14-12 in the fourth quarter. The home team prevailed with a 57-51 win.
