WVWC’s Padrino wins MEC Basketball Player of the Week honors

BRIDGEPORT – Following the opening weekend of the 2023-24 men’s and women’s basketball season, the Mountain East Conference announced its first Basketball Player of the Week honors of the season.

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Dieker Padrino was voted the Men’s Player of the Week, while Fairmont State’s Alyssa DeAngelo was named the Women’s Player of the Week.

The MEC Basketball Player of the Week honors are presented by The Health Plan.

Padrino, a graduate student from Bogota, N.J., averaged 28.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game as Wesleyan went 1-1 over the weekend at the Joe Retton Classic in Fairmont. Padrino opened the weekend with 32 points on 11-of-16 shooting against Edinboro on Friday evening. He followed up that performance 25 points on Saturday against Bloomsburg. In two games last week, Padrino shot 63 percent from the floor and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He made eight 3-pointers.

DeAngelo, a senior from Jefferson Hills, Pa., averaged 32.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals as Fairmont State opened the year by going 2-0 at the MEC/PSAC Challenge hosted by Seton Hill. On Friday against Lock Haven, DeAngelo shot 58 percent from the floor and scored 25 points to go with five rebounds in FSU’s opener. She also made five 3-pointers and had four assists against Lock Haven. On Saturday against Seton Hill, DeAngelo scored 39 points on 9-of-15 from the floor and 19-of-23 from the free throw line.
