WVWC’s Cash wins MEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Year; UC sweeps men’s and women’s indoor track and field titles

HUNTINGTON – The University of Charleston swept the 2024 Mountain East Conference men’s and women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening following day two of the championship at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex in Huntington.

The Charleston women won their third-consecutive championship with a team score of 172. West Virginia Wesleyan finished second with 104 points, followed by Wheeling (103), Frostburg State (87.50) and West Liberty (45) in the top five.

The UC men won for the conference championship for the third time in four years. Charleston scored 169 points to top the leaderboard, followed by Frostburg State (107), West Liberty (97.50), Davis & Elkins (79) and Wheeling (62.50) in the top five.

In addition to crowning team champions, the MEC also announced its postseason awards for the sport of indoor track & field on Saturday evening. For the women, Charleston’s Beth Sykes was named the league’s track athlete of the year, while West Virginia Wesleyan’s Samantha Cash repeated as the field athlete of the year. West Virginia State’s Candace Morris was recognized as the freshman of the year.

Cash was named the championships most outstanding performer (high point) with 39 points over the weekend. Cash finished first in the women’s pentathlon, triple jump and high jump, while finishing fourth in the 60m hurdles and fifth in the long jump.

The men’s award winners included Wheeling’s Moses Koroma as the track athlete of the year, Charleston’s Kellen Tropeck as the field athlete of the year, and Charleston’s Sam Idiens as the freshman of the year.

The men’s most outstanding performer was Charleston’s Bram De Raedt (22.50 points). De Raedt finished first in the 200m, 400m and 4×400 relay at the championship. He turned in provisional marks in the 400m and 4×400 relay during the championship.

Charleston head coach Nick Bias swept the men’s and women’s coach of the year awards in 2024.
