WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital earns five-star CMS patient survey ratings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital and WVU Medicine Jackson General Hospital have earned five-star patient survey ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, placing both hospitals among the highest-rated hospitals in the nation.

CMS’ Patient Survey Star Rating summarizes patients’ experiences of their inpatient care. The rating is designed to help patients and families compare hospitals.

“Achieving a five-star patient survey rating from CMS is a significant accomplishment because it reflects excellence in patients’ experience of receiving care,” Michael Stevens, M.D., WVU Health System chief quality officer, said. “It speaks to the consistency, commitment, and compassion of the teams providing care at Jackson General and St. Joseph’s every day.”

The recognition reflects the work of physicians, nurses and staff at both hospitals to provide safe, high-quality care while keeping patients and their families at the center of their work.

CMS’ patient survey star rating is based on patient surveys covering numerous questions, ranging from the quality of communication with doctors and nurses and the responsiveness of hospital staff to the cleanliness and quietness of the hospital, the quality of discharge information and patients’ overall rating of the hospital.

“Our teams in Ripley and Buckhannon should be proud of this recognition and what it represents for the communities they serve,” Stevens said.

The five-star ratings add to the recognition Jackson General and St. Joseph’s have received for their commitment to quality and patient care. Both hospitals serve as important healthcare resources for the communities and surrounding areas they serve.
