WVWC announces change in football leadership as Martin and staff will not return for 2026 season

West Virginia Wesleyan College said its entire football coaching staff will not return for the 2026 season. The school now begins a search for new leadership amid the program’s 34-game losing streak.

BUCKHANNON – West Virginia Wesleyan College announced today that Coach Dwyane Martin will not return as the head of its football program, effective immediately.

“After a comprehensive review and evaluation of the football program’s direction and long-term needs, and with consideration of the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics, WVWC has decided to move in a new direction with its football program,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Kyle Hoffman. “WVWC thanks Coach Martin for his years of service and tireless dedication to student-athletes, and wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.”

The Bobcats are in the middle of a 34-game losing streak overall, which dates back to Oct. 22, 2022.

Martin just finished his 10th season on the West Virginia Wesleyan football staff. After being named interim head coach in July of 2021, Martin was officially named head coach on Sept. 15, 2021. In 2019, Martin transitioned from defensive coordinator to special teams coordinator, as well as coaching the defensive backs. Martin, a native of Akron, Ohio, graduated from WVWC with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1996.

WVWC will begin the search for its next coach immediately.

“WVWC remains focused on building a competitive program that is centered on its commitment to student-athletes, while aligning with the mission and values of the institution. As part of this transition, the remainder of the football coaching staff were not retained,” announced Hoffman.
