William ‘Chess’ Mearns

William “Chess” Mearns, 77, of Buckhannon, W.Va. died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018 at the W.Va. Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg, W.Va.

He was born Jan. 1, 1941 in Buckhannon, a son of the late Paul and Jean Talbott Mearns.

On Sept. 17, 1965 he married Patricia Kay Carder, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Robert Glenn Mearns and wife Julie of Buckhannon; one daughter, Martha Jo Vassar and husband Shane of Buckhannon; two grandsons, Spencer Mearns and Chesley Blair Vassar both of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Violet Mearns of Buckhannon; one sister, Nancy Sandy and husband John of Buckhannon; and one nephew, Jeff Sandy of Buckhannon.

Mr. Mearns served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was also a 50-year member of the Franklin Lodge 7 A.F. & A.M. and was a Scottish Rite Mason. He was a Special Agent for the FBI and a member of the Frenchton United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018 from 5-8 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Helen R. Oates officiating. Burial will follow in the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, WV.

The Upshur County Honor Guard will be conducting Military Honors and the Franklin Lodge No. 7 A.F. & A.M. will be conducting Masonic Rites at the graveside.
