Weston resident wins Red Velvet Cake bake-off ahead of opening of BCT’s ‘Red Velvet Cake War’

BUCKHANNON — Cake bakers and sweets lovers gathered Sunday at the Chapel Hill Methodist Church in Buckhannon to celebrate the Buckhannon Community Theatre’s upcoming performance of “Red Velvet Cake War.”

Eight participants baked and brought their best Red Velvet Cakes to the Red Velvet Cake Bakeoff for judging by a panel that included Chef Dale Hawkins and Buckhannon Mayor Robbie Skinner, as well as attendees.

The judges selected Weston resident Denise Pellien as the winner, and the People’s Choice Award went to Buckhannon resident Shawn Hanifan.

BCT’s “Red Velvet Cake War: performance will be at The Colonial Arts Center in Buckhannon on E. Main St. at 7 p.m. May 4-7 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7.

Tickets are available at the door or by following the Eventbrite link on the Buckhannon Community Theatre Facebook page. Winners at Sunday’s event received tickets to the performance, a golden spatula to mark the occasion and a beautiful ceramic slice of Red Velvet Cake designed and crafted by the ceramics class at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.
