West Virginia reports 934 active COVID cases, seven new deaths on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 934 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 121 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (14), Barbour (10), Lewis (4), Randolph (7) and Webster (1) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of one active case in the last 24 hours. 

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 72-year old female from Wyoming County, a 64-year old female from Raleigh County, a 97-year old male from Pocahontas County, a 63-year old male from Raleigh County, an 84-year old female from Kanawha County and a 90-year old female from Wood County, and a 77-year old male from Pocahontas County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 5, 2022, there are currently 934 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been seven deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,879 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 111 residents are hospitalized with the virus (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated), with 25 currently in intensive care (56% unvaccinated, 44% vaccinated) and nine on a ventilator (44% unvaccinated, 56% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 5.51%. 

A total of 974,941 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 473,571 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
