West Virginia reports 8,482 active COVID cases and 15 new deaths on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 8,482 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 233 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (83), Barbour (59), Lewis (144), Randolph (85) and Webster (49) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of nine active cases in the last 24 hours.

Fifteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 69-year old female from Greenbrier County, a 70-year old male from Mineral County, a 67-year old male from Harrison County, a 66-year old male from Grant County, a 77-year old female from Nicholas County, a 57-year old male from Kanawha County, a 66-year old female from Greenbrier County, a 74-year old male from Jackson County, a 94-year old male from Mingo County, a 78-year old male from Marshall County, a 61-year old female from Barbour County, a 71-year old male from Wetzel County, an 82-year old female from Brooke County, a 71-year old female from Jefferson County, and an 88-year old male from Jackson County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 8, 2021, there are currently 8,482 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 15 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,036 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 593 residents are hospitalized with the virus (80% unvaccinated, 20% vaccinated), with 205 currently in intensive care (82% unvaccinated, 18% vaccinated) and 124 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 8.56%.

A total of 902,673 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 50% of the state.
